Begin the cycle
The reprocessing cycle

Four areas.
One instrument.

Sterile processing is the hidden engine of every hospital. Here's the floor you'll learn to run — area by area.

Stage 01 — Decontamination

Every instrument arrives contaminated.

The cycle starts at the sink. You'll learn how instruments travel from the operating room to the decontamination area, and how to take them from biohazard to workable — without putting yourself or anyone else at risk.

  • Point-of-use treatment and safe transport
  • Manual cleaning, ultrasonics, and washer-disinfectors
  • Detergents, enzymatics, and water quality
  • PPE and personal safety on the dirty side

Next — Prep & Pack
Stage 02 — Prep & Pack

Clean is not sterile.

In the prep and pack area you inspect every hinge, box lock, and serration, then assemble complete trays and package them so sterilant can reach every surface. This is where attention to detail becomes a career skill.

  • Instrument identification and inspection
  • Tray assembly and count sheets
  • Wrapping, peel pouches, and rigid containers
  • Chemical indicators and labeling

Stage 03 — Sterilization

Steam, time, temperature, pressure.

In the sterilization area you'll run the science that makes an instrument safe to enter the next patient's body — and prove it worked, every single load.

  • Steam, EtO, and low-temperature sterilization
  • Cycle parameters and load monitoring
  • Biological and chemical indicators
  • Load release and documentation

Stage 04 — Sterile Storage

Sterile until the moment it's used.

Sterilization means nothing if the pack is compromised on the shelf. In sterile storage you protect the work of the first three areas and deliver instruments to the OR ready for the next patient.

  • Event-related shelf life
  • Storage conditions, handling, and traffic control
  • Inventory and tray tracking
  • Case carts and distribution back to the OR
